Week 3 in Ulupalakua

We did our monthly shopping trip at Mana Foods, which is completely on the other side of the island. We figured it would make the most sense to try to hitchhike back home across the street from the Stupa of World Peace so that the glorious blessing of the Buddha head would be shining down on us. It worked.
A wild animal almost eats all of our monthly food supply but is frightened by the flash of the camera and scurries away.
Maui Muffins #2!
Muffins: coconut, cocoa powder, flour, sugar, mashed banana
Sauce: mashed papaya, cocoa powder, chopped mystery berries, vegan sprinkles
Joel could be a model for funny Indian shirts.
These are coffee beans drying in the sun under some wire so that birdies don't carry them off.
Purple fuzzy mystery flowerplant.
A dream I once had, now actualized.
Tropical spider busy making a home.
Laundry day.
Spikey red blue dream plant.
With beans and a white flower too!
This is where we do an hour of our 4 hour workday. We carry duck poop water to baby fruit trees.
These are mangoes. A rat keeps munching them, so we've been staking out, trying to catch him/her in the act. Mangoes are precious.
Our baby chickens socializing on some raised sticks.
Dream duck.
Dream tree and dream island and three dream clouds.
Unfurling!
A love sonnet with onion prop.

The WWOOFer Refugee Center

Spidermonster likes coffee too!
Usually the spider doesn't bother us, but this is taking it a little too far, Spidermonster.
ASHLEY MAKES CUPCAKES!!! But, we don't have a cupcake pan or an oven that makes sense to us, so these are cast iron skillet muffins.
Cupcake: flour-cocoa-sugar-coconut-banana
Sauce: mashed papaya-strawberries-sprinkles
A caped cupcake crusader. 1st cupcakes in Hawaii!

Ulupalakua Ultimance

Joel becomes angry at the mongoose who's been eating our bananas when we're not looking. Although we do eat at least 6 bananas a day, we still feel that it's unfair that the mongoose eats 3.
Joel is very successful at this papaya retrieving game.

Balcony edible flowers awaiting addtion to seasonal salad.
A small ET fails at hiding its face to us.
Some sort of hypnotic trance reveaved through tropical fruit.
Symmetry of simpleness. Kale salad with mustard greens, sprouted garbanzos, sprout mix and edible flowers.
The beauty of this! It exists.
Dreamlike fruit basket.
Ashley plays the UKULELE! This has become her new instrument of choice. Goodbye Banjo, Hello Uke!
What could be more perfect? Coffee and mochi! A nice midafternoon's snacktreat.

Something special is happening here but we're not quite sure what.
Dining room bamboo set, beautiful kitchen, happy WWOOFers.
Sprouted garbanzos for the first time, and chardonnay, and a book stack of interest.
The last drops are always the sweetest thanks to agave nectar build up.
No, we're not moving here.
Some sort of dialogue.
Our goal is to bring none of this back.
A nice outdoor sitting area.
Our theater-window. We watch birds in the midst of their mating game.
What a collection!
Gourmet sleeping accommodations.
We are so lucky!
We even get good internet reception. That's why we've been posting so often.

Rancho Relaxo

Joel picks breakfast. Papayas from the tree! We eat at least 4 papayas a day. Ashley has a papaya pie recipe that will come to life soon, once we can figure out how to hitchhike out on this country road to a grocery store for ingredients.
Sometimes the papayas fall down to the ground instead of nestling in the picker basket. Then, Joel has to squeeze himself between rocks and trees to fetch the fallen treat. Ducks like to eat papayas, too, and they are often on the prowl for falling ones.
Success! Look at the accomplishment in that face.
This is the nursery. Many tropical babies are growing.
There's lots of time for quiet moments here. We are the only WWOOFers and we have a nice cottage all to ourselves.
We acquired two nice travel bags from yard sales that we will use to move our things from now on. They have wheels and they are orange! Ashley likes orange.
Ashley also likes Coffee Tree Heaven. We discovered coffee plants growing in the gardens here!
Joel finds a nice stalk of kale while we pick veggies for dinner.
Pineapple growing in the foreground.
Ashley processes coffee beans by squeezing them out of the berries into water.
They'll sit in the water for about a week or until their gooey layer dissolves. Then they'll be a nice green color, and then they get roasted in a pan, and then crunched, and then brewed, ad then slurped.
Playing with coffee is heart warming.
We try eating Atemoya for the first time.
A typical tropical lunch. Kale salad with papaya and edible flowers.
We had to look up Atemoya in the fruit dictionary to see whether we could eat the skin or not. Apparently we cannot because there are many molds and buggies growing on them. But we do enjoy their dinosaur like quality.
Sunset scene. Notice the tip of the island in the mist of the lower-right background.
Goodbye sun. See you tomorrow!
Unbelievable.
